QuoteClix Insurance Quotes, Classic Car Auto Insurance 101: Classic cars require some love in the auto insurance side of things as well. There are some special items to consider after all that hard work of restoring that classic muscle car. Here are a few of the basics that come with auto insurance on the classic car:

There is a difference between Antique and Classic

Just how old is that car you are pain strikingly restoring? This can play a big role in how your car is classified in the eye of auto insurance companies. There are two big classifications when it comes to auto insurance.

The first classification is a “Classic” automobile. Classic cars are generally those cars manufactured between 1940 and 1970. There are some exceptions to this rule though. These exceptions have to do with model runs, Car Company, and other various car factors. An example would come in the likes of a DeLorean. The DeLorean is no longer made, was manufactured for a short period of time, has a huge fan following, and the manufacturer is no longer producing cars.

The second classification is an “Antique” automobile. This classification applies to cars made before 1940. Talk with your auto insurance agent to find out what classification your car truly falls into.

These classifications don’t mean one auto insurance rate will be better or worse than the other will. Model runs, parts availability, and how prolific the car was will still play into your rates. A car like the a 1920’s era Ford Model T will classify as an antique, but will have cheaper auto insurance rate than a classic like the 1960’s Ferrari 33 TRI/LM. The reason the Model T will cost less to insure is there were millions of them made. The Ferrari, well good luck even finding the car.

Restrictions apply too more than speed limits

Restrictions will also be a big part of your auto insurance policy. Once you find a company to put a policy on ‘Ol Bessie, you will need to talk to the agent about what you are and are not able to do with your car.

These restrictions can range from something as simple as you have to trailer the car to car shows. You may only be allowed to drive the car in parades or on Sundays and Government Recognized holidays. These restrictions might even apply to how you store your car.

These restrictions can get even more severe depending on the car itself. Higher auto insurance rates might come into play if you, or anyone in your household has some sort of ticket on their driving records. Every driver may even have to have access to a daily driver that is not the special car in interest.

Make sure you sit down with your auto insurance agent to go over all the fine details of your new policy. You don’t want something silly like driving your car in a parade on the Fourth of July to make your policy null and void.

Classic cars are a great snapshot of where our autos have come. Make sure you keep that car in mind when you start hunting down auto insurance for your classic ride. Once that is squared away, enjoy riding in that pride and joy resting peacefully in the garage.
