HAAS Alert lets you know when emergency vehicles are near.  The way the system works is simple. Emergency vehicles, like firetrucks or ambulances equipped with HAAS Alert, will automatically send a notification to phones with the apps installed that notifies drivers that there is an approaching emergency vehicle. It’s not totally unlike Waze, but the notifications are directly from the source, not from HAAS Alert users.

According to Forbes, Progressive started offering their telematics program back in 1998, and one-third of overall customers opt-in to participate and of that one-third, two-thirds receive savings. Allstate also offers a program called Drivewise, Esurance offers Drivesense and State Farm offers Drive Safe & Save, to name a few.

Currently, all of the usage-based insurance programs only reward you for your good driving with savings; however, in the future, it is expected that users will also get penalized for poor driving. Essentially, If you typically drive well above the speed limit, take risks on the road or drive erratically, telematics is not the best option for you because you won’t receive any savings for your driving behavior. It’s important to note that telematics is currently not offered in Alaska, California, Hawaii, Indiana and North Carolina.

The Basics: Nissan has recalled approximately 134,000 2016-2017 Maxima sedans, 2015-2017 Murano crossovers, and 2015-2016 Murano Hybrids due to the potential of a fire. Only models equipped with Intelligent Cruise Control are affected by this recall.

The Problem: Apparently, the Intelligent Cruise Control features an anti-lock brake actuator pump that may allow brake fluid to leak onto an internal electrical circuit board. If that happens, it could result in an underhood fire.

A Texas man escaped a nasty situation when his Toyota SUV got hung up in some safety wires after plunging from the roof of a parking structure this past weekend.

According to KXAN, a young man was parking his 2004 4Runner on the top deck of the nine-story Littlefield Garage in downtown Austin when something went wrong. As he pulled into an outward-facing parking spot, the SUV failed to stop and rolled off the edge of the structure. The 4Runner’s front axle became entangled in the structure’s wire safety barriers and, as it fell, it flipped over and came to a stop in midair, still running, with the terrified driver trapped inside. Zachary Cayson and his two friends had just parked their car in the garage when they witnessed the event.

One of the crucial rules at the Nürburgring Nordschleife’s Touristenfahrt driving days is that you simply do not go walking around the track surface while there are other cars coming. A British driver got a very effective reminder, luckily escaping unscathed.

Another fatal Tesla Model S crash is under investigation, this time in China. Reports are now surfacing of a Model S driver who was tragically killed when his car hit a street sweeping vehicle on the side of a highway in the province of Hebei. The family of 23-year-old Gao Yaning reportedly sued Tesla over the incident, saying that Autopilot failed to prevent the accident.
