NHTSA is opening a preliminary evaluation into airbag inflators from Arc Automotive. The agency has reports of two ruptures with injuries: one in a 2002 Chrysler Town and Country and another in a 2004 Kia Optima. It’s not yet known whether the incidents are linked.

Subaru is recalling over 32,000 units of the 2012 Impreza because the Occupant Detection System might not work correctly for the front passenger seat. This can cause the airbag not to deploy in a crash.

Don’t Drink and Drive: The good news, is that fewer teens are drinking today (72 percent), according to the Monitoring the Future study. However, that may not stop some teens from operating a vehicle while intoxicated—or riding with someone who is. Drinking and driving is not only illegal, it is unsafe. Consider helping your teen come up with a response she/he is comfortable giving to turn down alcohol, and insist that she/he never get into a vehicle with anyone who has been drinking.

Use Your Seat Belt: Generally, seat belt use has steadily increased since the early 90s, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. However, teens are less likely to buckle up, both while driving and as passengers, than the rest of the population. You can help your teen understand the importance of seat belts by buckling up every time you drive or ride in a car.

Limit Technology: Despite laws banning texting and talking while driving, research shows that the practice is still widespread. Nearly 60% of high school seniors and more than 40% of high school juniors reported that they have texted or sent emails while driving, according to an anonymous national survey released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Remind your teen not to use mobile devices in the car and to pull over if they believe it is important to make a call or send a text.

Drive During the Day: You may want to consider waiting until your teen has more driving experience, before permitting your teen to drive at night. At night, it is harder to see, as well as judge distance and speed, therefore spend a lot of time practicing nighttime driving with your teen

Reduce the Distractions: Teenagers can limit distractions by regulating noise in the car, such as conversations, music. Loud music or distracting conversations while driving can be the distraction that makes them fail to avoid an accident and or cause an accident.

Did you know that statistically, teenagers are less likely to get into an accident when they are driving alone or with an adult, so consider setting limits on when and how often your child can ride with or transport other teenagers.
