The Toll of Fourth of July in California
The country celebrated its Independence Day last Saturday with barbecues and firework shows. However, the Fourth of July is a dangerous time to be on the roadways, especially in California.
Last Saturday, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) arrested 1,239 motorists for driving under the influence. Also during the holiday, there were 24 traffic fatalities, 12 of which weren’t wearing their seatbelts.
July 4th is a CHP maximum enforcement day. A maximum enforcement day is one where all available officers are out patrolling the streets. The CHP conducts six maximum enforcement days a year on holidays where the roads are likely to be congested: Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year, Fourth of July, Memorial Day and Labor Day.
Make sure you party safe Californians. A DUI can lead to serious financial repercussions including heavy fines and increased car insurance rates. In fact, a DUI in California will stay on your driving record for 10 years and can cost individuals over $7,000 in fees and car insurance.
